Richard G. Erskine Live: The Healing Relationship in Practice
A live psychotherapy demonstration, analysis of therapeutic interventions and clinical dialogue
What does a therapist notice before intervening?
What leads a therapist to ask a question, respond or remain silent at a particular moment? How do they understand what is happening between therapist and client? And how can the therapeutic relationship become part of the process of change?
On 8 December 2026, we will have the opportunity to observe Richard G. Erskine working with a client live.
This online clinical training will bring together a brief theoretical introduction, a live psychotherapy demonstration and an in-depth look at the thinking behind the therapist’s responses and interventions.
Participants will be able to observe what Richard Erskine does and, after the demonstration, explore the clinical thinking behind it with him:
- what he noticed;
- what he listened for and followed;
- how he understood the client’s process;
- what guided his interventions;
- why he responded as he did at particular moments;
- how he worked with the therapeutic relationship.

Seeing theory at work in a live therapeutic encounter
Theory gives us concepts, a professional language and a framework for understanding therapy. It is much harder to put into words the moment when a therapist notices something, tests an emerging understanding, decides to speak or remain silent, and responds to what is happening in the relationship.
That is why a live psychotherapy demonstration will be at the heart of this training.
Following a brief introduction to the principles of developmentally based, relationally focused integrative psychotherapy, Richard G. Erskine will conduct a therapeutic session with a volunteer selected in advance.
After the demonstration, Richard will revisit the process with participants and explain his clinical thinking: what he noticed, how he understood the relational dynamics and what influenced his decisions. Particular attention will be given to therapeutic presence, attunement, inquiry and involvement.
The demonstration will follow appropriate informed consent and ethical procedures, with support provided to the volunteer.
What will you explore?
The training offers an opportunity to:
- gain a concise introduction to Erskine’s relationally focused integrative approach;
- observe psychotherapy in practice;
- recognise therapeutic presence and attunement as they unfold;
- understand the clinical thinking behind specific interventions;
- reflect on the therapeutic and relational process;
- engage in clinical dialogue with Richard G. Erskine and ask questions.
The event does not focus on a single therapeutic technique. Its central theme is the relationship and the process unfolding within it, making it relevant across different approaches to psychotherapy.
